Still Life with Bun and Cheese

I wanted to reimagine Still Life with Bread and Eggs, 1865 by Paul Cézanne, as I’ve always been inspired by the cycle of recreations throughout European art history and how artists across time have revisited, reinterpreted, and reframed paintings of the past. I wanted to do the same through a diasporic lens.
In my work, I often feature food, drink, technology, and domestic elements alongside people. Recently, I’ve been particularly interested in how objects alone can function as portraits - markers of identity, connection, and belonging.
If you don’t know, bun is a Caribbean adaptation of the British hot cross bun. Richly spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and mixed fruits, and almost always paired with a thick slice of processed cheddar.
